UVS

Uvs Aimag a geographical wonderland, with mountain glaciers and permanent snow feeding torrents, which disgorge, into huge landlocked seas. Uvs Aimag has an area of 69,600 square kilometers, and an estimated population of 85.800 inhabitants. The administrative center is the town of Ulaangom, in the depression of the lake of Uvs Nuur, at 939 meters above sea level, 1,425 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.

Tombs on a mountain
The mountain of Chandmani Uul, near the town of Ulaangom, has 50 tombs of the 7th and 8th Century A.D Turkic and Uigar inscribed ancient monuments also occur around the town of Ulaangom.

Lake of Uvs Nuur
Uvs Nuur is the largest lake in Mongolia. It is 743 meters above sea level, 80 kilometers wide and 80 kilometers long, covering 3,350 square kilometers with clear but brackish water –a land-locked Inland Sea. It is a magnet for birds; over 220 species are recorded, including Osprey, White-tailed Eagle, and Black Stork. Swan Goose, Bar-headed Goose and Eurasian Spoonbill. Over 100 pairs of Spoonbill nest in the vicinity, also Great White Heron. Whopper Swan, Great Black-headed Gull, White-headed Gull and Black Stork.

Massive belt of sand dunes
Buurug Els is a massive belt of sand which extends from the eastern part of the lake of Uvs Nuur, blanketing an area of 4,000 square kilometers in length and 50 kilometers wide.

Bayad people
Bayad people live in the east soums such as Khyargas, Zuungobi, Tes, and Malchin soums of Uvs. In the census of the population, 51000 Bayad people were in 2000.

Mountains with eternal snow
The mountain of Kharkhiraa Uul and Turgen Uul have eternal snow. Kharkhiraa Uul reaches 4,038 meters above sea level and Turgen Uul 3,965 meters. There are many kinds of rare plants.

Lake of Khyargas Nuur
Khyargas Nuur is one of Mongolian’s largest lakes, covering 1,406 square kilometers. It is 75 kilometers long, 31 kilometers wide and 80 meters deep.
The Zavkhan River feeds Lake Airag Nuur, which is connected, to Khyargas Nuur by a channel. The water is brackish and has rare fish such as Mongolian Grayling.

Turkic inscribed monument
An ancient Turkish inscribed monument is at Khuduugiin Uushig, Bukhmurun soum. Durvud people live in the southwest and northern soums of Uvs. 67,000 Durvud people were registered in the census of population, 2000.

The rocky beak
The number of paintings of ibex, camel, ox, people and etc are on the green gray rock that has been enjoyed the state protection since 1998.
