KHOVD
Khovd Aimag is a world apart, where snow-clad
peaks feed torrential rivers, breaking out of high mountains
to feed land-locked lakes, fresh then salty, in the huge hot
Lakes Depression of Western Mongolia. Khovd Aimag covers 76,100
square kilometers, and has 90,000 inhabitants. The administrative
center is Khovd on Buyant valley, 1,405 meters above sea level,
1,425 kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar.
Khovd river
The Khovd River rises in the permanent snows of Tavan Bogd
Uul and flows 516 kilometers into the lake of Khar Us Nuur.
The main tributaries are the Tsagaan River and Sagsai River.
The Khovd River supports special fish, such as the Khovd Umber
and other species.
Large land-locked lake
Khar Us Nuur is one of the largest lakes of Mongolia. The
lake covers 1,153 square kilometers, being 72 kilometers
wide. An island is in the lake. Mongolian Grayling –
unique in the World – and other rare fish are present.
Mountain with eternal snow
Tsambagarav Uul is a large mountain with eternal snow on the
border of Khovd Aimag and Bayan – Ulgii Aimag. Sometimes
called “snow 3 mountains”, its elevation is 4,195
meters above sea level.
Mankhanii Tal
This is steppe, in the valley of the lake of Khar-Us Nuur,
encompassing the territory of several Soums on Khovd Aimag.
Tsenkher Agui
It is a cave 25 kilometers west of the center of Mankhan
Soum, on the western slope of a mountain on the West Bank
of the Tsenkher River. The cave is about 20 meters high
and was inhabited 40,000 – 12,000 years ago in the
Paleolithic Era. The paint pigment is composed of red and
brown earths. Soot from smoke also covers the walls and
roof of the cave.
Munhkhairkhan Uul
It is part of the main chain of the Mongol Altai Mountain
Range, extending 100 kilometers from northwest to southeast.
Munhkhairkhan Uul has eternal snow and glaciers covering
an area of 200 square kilometers. The highest peak is Tavan
Khumst that attains 4,205 meters above sea level.
Kharuul
Ovoo
It is a sacred head of stone at an altitude of 1,941 meters
above sea level, on the border of Uyench and Bulgan Soum.
It is one of the 13 scared heaps of stones erected by Togruut.
The Kharuul Ovoo is about 25 meters high and 50 meters in
diameter. There is a temprory port “Yarant” to
China in Bulgan soum.
Myangan Ugalzat National Park
This national park is part of the Mongol Altai Mountain
Range. It was placed under protection in 2002.
