Accommodation: Rooms of
deluxe, semi-deluxe, first class and tourist categories are
available at the hotels in Ulaanbaatar
and Mongolian Ger at the tourist camp. The rooms are facilitated
with shower/toilet and telephone.
Customs: Every traveler must fill in a customs
declaration form which should be retained until departure. This
allows the free import and re-export of articles intended for
personal use for duration of stay. It is prohibited to import
and export.

Translators: As hardly any foreign languages are
spoken outside the capital, a guide or translator is essential.
MDT provides experienced guides speaking English, German,
French, Italian, Japanese and Chinese.
Getting to Mongolia: Air: There are direct
flights to Ulaanbaatar from Beijing,
Moscow, Berlin, Seoul, Osaka, Ulan Ude and Irkutsk.

Health: Mongolia is generally a healthy country
to travel in. Hospitals are available in Ulaanbaatar. If you
require particular medication, take an adequate supply with
you. No specific vaccinations are legally required to enter
Mongolia. All our cars are equipped with first-aid kits in
case of emergency.
Roads: Except in and around the cities there
are no paved roads. Therefore traveling is slow and an off-road
car is essential when visiting the countryside.
Security: Mongolia is generally a safe country
to travel. Safe deposit boxes are available at the MDT head
office. In any case of need, our staff is always ready to
be of your emergency assistance around the clock.
Shopping: Time is allowed for shopping in
Ulaanbaatar and at the tourist camps.
There are many duty free shops where convertible currencies
are accepted. A wide range of goods may be bought for foreign
currency at favorable prices – popular souvenirs are
traditional dresses “Del”, felt-hats, cashmere-jumpers,
dolls, snuff-bottles and Mongol calligraphy as well as a great
choice of landscape- and traditional paintings. Exporting
old and antique items requires a special export-license from
the Department of Culture.
Taxis: There are many official taxis such
as City Taxi, MonKor Taxi and more.
Telecommunications: Most hotels and guest
houses have international direct dialing, as well as telex
and fax facilities.
Time Zones: Our country straddles the 6th,
7th and 8th world time zones (the western 5 aimags ate situated
in the 6th, the central aimags in the 7th and the eastern
2 aimags in the 8th time zone)
Transportation: There are two possibilities
to enter Mongolia- by air and by train.
By Air: The majority of visitors arrive
in Mongolia by air through Buyant Ukhaa International Airport
located 18 kms to the southwest of Ulaanbaatar.
Been reconstructed in 1990, immigration and customs formalities
as well as luggage delivery are very prompt. MIAT, Aeroflot,
Korean Airlines and Air China operate the international air
transport. Japanese Airlines and All Nippon Airways have recently
started operating new charter flights between Japan and Mongolia
during summer tourist season.

• From Europe to Beijing with the major foreign companies
and then to Ulaanbaatar with MIAT (Mongolian Airlines) or

• From Frankfurt to Ulaanbaatar direct with MIAT (OM)

MIAT Mongolian
Airlines, the national flag carrier of Mongolia, which
is responsible for 95% of all air transportation in Mongolia,
operates scheduled flights to overseas destinations such as
Moscow, Beijing , Berlin, Irkutsk, Hoh hot, Seoul , Osaka
and Singapore using a fleet of 26 aircrafts: Airbus, Boeing
B727-200 and Antonove (AN24, AN26, AN30)
By Train: Trans
Mongolian Railway operates some 1,110 kilometers of "Trans-Mongolian
Main Line" (inside Mongolia). Dating back to 1938, the
Trans Mongolian runs from Russian border via Ulaanbaatar to
the Chinese border. Exploring Mongolia following the rail
lines of the legendary Trans Mongolian and Trans Siberian
Railways is more than a simple way of transportation; it is
an expedition in itself. Total distance by rail from Beijing
to St Petersburg is 7,925 km. Travelers can join in Moscow
(or St Petersburg) or in Beijing (or Hong Kong and Hanoi ).
There are usually nine compartments in each carriage with
four berths in each (twin-share rail compartments are available
for a supplementary price).
