GOBI-ALTAI
Gobi-Altai Aimag is a land where the parched
steppe grasslands of the Gobi meet the rocky landscape of
the Altai Range. Gobi-Altai Aimag has an area of 141,400 square
kilometers and an estimated population of 64.200 inhabitants.
The administrative center is the town of Altai, situated on
the Altai Range, at an altitude of 2,181 meters above sea
level and 1,001 kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar.
Shargiin Gobi Natural Reserve
The Shrgiin Gobi is one of two parts of the Natural Reserve
of “Sharga Mankhanii Tal”. The reserve was created
in 1994, in order to conserve the habitat of the Mongolian
subspecies of the Saiga Antelope, a species listed in the
“International Red Data Book”, and now widespread
only here.
Eej Khairkhan Monument
The waterfall cascades from the peak of the Eej Khairkhan
(2.275) meters and is famous for its beauty. The water flows
through nine natural steps, each a pothole eroded in granite,
2 to 3 meters wide, rounded asnd 2 to 4 meters deep.
Oasis and Gobi Bear
Zakhuin Bayan Burd is a well-known oasis, which lies at the
southern foot of the Mongol Altai Mountain Range. The Zarman
Oasis on the eastern part of Zakhui. Here maybe you would
meet “Mazaalai” – the Gobi Bear, a strictly
protected species on the brink of extinction.
Dinosaurs and large mammals
Dinosaur skeletons have been found in Naranbulag, which
lies in the Biger Depression. Saiga Antelope, Asiatic Wild
Ass, Argali and Siberian Ibex live here. Also special plants
such as Saxaul bushes (Haloxylon ammodendron), and Poplar
trees (Populus diversifolia), also Elaeagnus moorcroftii,
Tamarix and Sophora flavescens.
Grassed – over desert sand
dunes
Mongol Els is a belt of vegetated sand dunes, which stretches
over 330 kilometers from the Zavhkan river mouth, and covers
an area of 2,274 square kilometers. This is one of the largest
sand dune belt in Mongolia.
Mountain with eternal snow
Sutai Uul is a mountain with eternal snow, reaching 4,090
meters above sea level. The Zuiliin River takes its source
from the permanent snow of Sutai Uul and falls into Lake
of Tonkhil Nuur.
Canyon of Bugat Khavtsal
The canyon is so very narrow that two jeeps cannot get pass
each other. On 1996 the Alag Khairkhan Uul Natural Reserve
was declared to safeguard 36,400 hectares in Bugat Soum.
