BAYANKHONGOR
Bayankhongor Aimag os land of contrasts.
The north is dominated by the Khangai Mountain Range feeding
fast river, cut in canyons, rushing south into the stillness
of the land-locked lakes of the central depression, cut off
by the Gobi-Altai Mountain Range from the vast Gobi
Desert to the south down by the Chinese border. The aimag
covers 116,000 square kilometers and has 85,700 inhabitants.
The Gobi-Altai Mountain Range dominates the south of the aimag;
the Khangai Mountain Range dominates the north. The administrative
center is the town of Bayankhongor, on the bank of the Tuin
River at 1.859 meters above sea level, 630 kilometers from
Ulaanbaatar.
A hundred hot springs
Shargaljuut Rashaan a famous group of hot springs. The spring
cover 2 hectares, with over 100 hot see pages. The water
is an impressive +90oC. Of interest, the southern limit
of permafrost is northwest of Shargaljuut.
“Axe-factory” of Paleolithic
Era
The mountain of Uran Khairkhan Uul, in Ulziit Soum, is site
of an “axe-factory” of the Paleolithic Era (500,000-700,000
years ago). Several hundred stone implements have been discovered
state protection since 1998.
Gobi lake with water –
birds
The lake surface is at 1,198 meters above sea level
and covers 140 square kilometers. The water is rich in fish.
The abundance of food and secure nesting places attract
flocks of birds Dalmatian Pelican, Mute Swan, Bar-headed
Goose, Swan Goose and Little Whimbrel.
Tsagaan agui
The trace of ancient people who kived 700,000 years aso were
found from this cave which a length of over 40 meters and
it’s located on the mountain of Tsagkhir of Bayanlig
soum. Perhaps this confirms guess of scientists that human
generated in central Asia. There is a rock painting in the
Ikh bayan soum. This monument belongs to the bronze and has
been protected since 1998.
Picturesque oasis in the Gobi
Zuunmod Oasis is a picturesque oasis located at the edge
of Great Gobi. On the way one can see beautiful oases of
Jartiinkhuv and Daliin Khuv.
Giant dinosaurs
Nogoontsav is a beautiful place displaying layers of sediments,
colored red, yellow and green in cliff 20 meters high and
extending for 8 to 10 kilometers. Skeletons and fossils of
giant dinosaurs of Cretaceous age have been found here.
Hottest place in Mongolia
The Ekhiin Gol is the Hottest place in Mongolia- a maximum
air temperature of 42.2oC has been recorded here in summer.
Mean annual precipitation is extremely low, only 13.4 millimeters.
Mean January and July temperatures are -11.6C and 25.4C.
mean annual temperature is 9C
Lake with rare birds
The lake of Buun Tsagaan Nuur is one of the biggest of five
lakes lying on the Lakes Depression, which divides the Khangai
and Gobi-Altai mountain range. The lake covers 240 square
kilometers and is at an altitude of 1.336 meters above sea
level.
Whooper Swan, Mute Swan, Swan and Bar-headed Goose-mentioned
in the “Red Book of Mongolian”-have been recorded.
Deep narrow canyon
The canyon is 100 to 50 meters deep but only 10 meters wide,
and in places be extremely narrow, barely a meter wide.
Galuut Khavtsal is in a network of magnificent canyon cut
by the Baidrag river system, claimed to be Mongolia’s
most spectacular system of canyons.
In springtime birds such as ducks make their nests. It is
interesting to watch from a distance the eggs like rice
on the table.
